A Haven Away From the Storm

This page is dedicated to my favorite charitable organizations, projects and other philanthropic ideas. Donating time to this has helped me work through my grief. While many of these causes accept monetary donations, there are other ways to contribute. Check out the Tiny Altruist page for a list of ways that include small children.

Pediatric Oncology/Children in the Hospital

Crochet/Knit/Sew

Knit or crochet hats for preemie babies and pediatric oncology patients for your local hospital. There are many free patterns online.

Sew pillowcases for your local hospital.

Make Cards for Kids in the Hospital

Noah received many cards like these. Even if you’re not an artist, they accept all kinds of cards. It’s nice to get mail in the hospital. This is great way to involve children.

E-Card

If you know a child in the hospital, many hospital websites have a link where you can send an e-card that will be printed off and delivered to the child’s room. This is a simple and thoughtful way to let someone you know that you are thinking about them.

NICU

Make knit or crochet hats for your local NICU babies

The hats are a treasured keepsake. They help keep the baby's temperature up, and parents appreciate having something that fits their child since most do not plan to have a baby so early.

The Preemie Project

The preemie project is seeking developmental hearts sewn from an 8x8 scrap of fabric. These hearts are placed on the mother's skin to absorb her scent then are put in the baby's crib or isolette in the NICU so the mother is

always with her baby. Other projects are requested based on current needs.

NICU Awareness

This website is full of great information on the NICU. You can make a donation or order care packages, crib signs and other gifts to families who have a child in the NICU.

March of Dimes

Another resource of information on the NICU. Donations go towards research and funding materials for families during the NICU stay. Walks are scheduled across the country every year.

Angel Gown

Consider donating your wedding dress or a pale colored bridesmaid gown to NICU Helping Hands. Your dress will be made into a burial gown for a family whose baby died in the hospital.

Donate Blood
